Any Issues Deploying MS SQL 2005 Express Databases to the ULTIMA Server

Tomorrow, I am looking to build and deploy the Microsoft Personal Web Site Starter kit (see link)...

    http://www.asp.net/downloads/starterkits/PersonalSite.aspx?tabid=62

I am using MS Web Site Developer Express and SQL 2005 Express to achieve this. Have you had any users try this already or something very similar? Apparently it has 2 databases though only 3 or 4 tables. I suspect questions about this Starter Kit will start to come in thick and fast as your starter hosting package is very competitively priced and this Starter Kit approach seems a good place to start according to the www.asp.net site (which is where I got your recommendation from).

Do I need to do any conversion to deploy an SQL 2005 Express database to your server? It will be deployed using the inbuilt copy function of the MS Visual Web Developer Express software..

    Thanks in advance...

    Regards

Re: Any Issues Deploying MS SQL 2005 Express Databases to the ULTIMA Server

    Hi Mawwebsite,
This is usually pretty straightforward ... provided (of course, like everything else with computers) you follow the right steps.  First, you cannot directly deploy a Sql Express database to a shared hosting server ... any shared hosting server ... using the same technique that VS or Visual Web Developer Express usually use ... that's the auto-attached user database.  We really, really tried to make this happen.  Mark and I worked on it for more time than I care to admit ... we really wanted to provide this as a service for our customers, but couldn't come up with a way to do it reliably and (most importantly) securely.  Finally, we had to accept Microsoft's statement that this just isn't supported in a shared environment at this time.  :-(

All that being said, that doesn't mean that Sql Server Express or VWD are bad for developing great web sites on ... that's just not true.  The price is right (can't argue with free), the tools are excellent and, gosh darn it, they are just darn easy to use.  BUT ... you have one or two more steps to take before you deploy to your "production" Ultima environment.  First, you'll have to get Sql Server Management Studio Express (free too from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download).  Then you'll have to attach your database, back it up and restore it.  Our KB has instructions for doing this at https://www.ultimasupport.net/Customer/KBArticle.aspx?articleid=23.  And if you have issues ... just send us an email at support@ultimahosts.net and we'll help you get going.

Re: Any Issues Deploying MS SQL 2005 Express Databases to the ULTIMA Server

REF: Using MS EXPRESS tools only

    Hi UltimaForums,

Thanks for all the responses so far........

Here is a quick question regarding adding NEW tables to an existing deployed Personal (MyPersonal) database hosted by Ultima.

I have a database on your server (MyPersonal) and I want to add 2 new tables to it. What is the best approach to do this... is it...

    a) Backup the existing MyPersonal Ultima Database
    b) Attach the offline database to SQL Management Studio Express (you advised this in a previous response)
    c) Drop any tables that are not relevant leaving just the 2 (new ones) for upload to Ultima
    d) Backup the resulting MyPersonal database offline
    e) FTP to host area using VWDE
    f) Restore the database with the 2 new tables to the existing MyPersonal Database

Am I right in thinking this will add the 2 new tables leaving the existing ones in MyPersonal intact at Ultima or will it wipe all tables in the existing database leaving just the 2 new ones (nightmare scenario)?

Maybe their is a much easier way of doing this using an online SQL tool hosted by Ultima?

    What would you advise...?

Thanks in advance for all your help

    Regards
