    Unmetered Bandwidth?

    Hi,

Is it just me or have the bandwidth amounts changed from 'unmetered' to limited amounts for the .NET Advantage plans? [ http://www.ultimahosts.net/products/standardplans/ ]

    Hi Jits,

They have changed as we needed to apply a limit due to a requirement from a forum we advertise in.

    Cheers,

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for clearing that up. An official announcement on the homepage would be nice :)

The amounts seem a bit low, especially coming from unmetered bandwidth. Any particular reason for this?

    Cheers,

    Re: Unmetered Bandwidth?

    Hi Jits,

We are going to review the bandwidth as it was based on current usage.

It doesn't apply to existing plans so I am not sure why we would make an official announcement - can you clarify this?

    Cheers,

    Mark

    Hey Mark,

Sorry, I was under the impression that the bandwidth changes applied to existing customers.

Also, I'm not actually a customer just yet, but am seriously considering signing up. So a bit disappointed that I missed out on the unmetered bandwidth ;-)

    Cheers,

    Re: Unmetered Bandwidth?

    Hi Jits,

No problem. We haven't really made it official yet (as in from this date on all plans will be metered) so you are still welcome to purchase a plan which will be unmetered. I will publish an announcement on the forums about the starting date of when all plans and renewals will be swapped over to their metered versions. We will increase the bandwidth as in review, like you said, it does seem low.

    Cheers,

    Mark

    Ultima Mark:

    {...}
of when all plans and renewals will be swapped over to their metered versions.
    {...}

Does this mean that renewal of plan will decrease the bandwith ? What will be the limit ? I do not find anything on this subject.

    Re: Unmetered Bandwidth?

A few days ago, the .NET Advantage plans had specific bandwidth amounts instead of 'unmetered'. But this has been changed back by Mark until the details are finalised. As Mark says, their will be an official announcement about this (with specific dates) when it happens.

    Hope that clears it up.

    Yes, clear.
It seems that bandwith are now explicitly mentionned in the different plan.

I'm with you Jits .. I signed up for a trial account last week. it expired yesterday, so I went to look at the plans to see which plan I wanted to sign up for. That's when I noticed that the bandwidth limits had been imposed. Now I kind of wish I didn't use the trial ... If would've just signed up from the beginning, I wouldn't have the bandwidth limit ...

    Re: Unmetered Bandwidth?

    Hi Brad,

Yeah, shame that the bandwidth limits have been imposed.

However it has to be said... we have to be realistic here. From everything I've heard, its next to impossible for a hosting provider to have completely unmetered bandwidth without a strict usage policy [which would go against UltimaHosts' ethos] to prevent abuse. Also, there is the cost to the hosting provider for the upstream bandwidth provider. So, I think it's right to have bandwidth limits (in order for the hosting provider to maintain quality/costs and to focus on providing awesome service) BUT I personally would like to see the bandwidth offerings higher on UltimaHosts' plans.

    My £0.02 :)

    Re: Unmetered Bandwidth?

Not only do I feel that the bandwidth allocations are too low, but now the .NET Advantage Plans page says that an additional 10GB bandwidth per month will cost $15 a month. That's the cost of the whole Standard.Net plan!

I sincerely hope this is subjct to change.

    Re: Unmetered Bandwidth?

We based our bandwidth limits on what 99% of sites reach (and then doubled this). So most sites don't use over 5 GB a month. We only have a few sites which reach over 20 GB a month. Though we do have one that does over 200 GB but that is in its own VPS.

We also based the bandwidth overage rates on what we are able to purchase this for at wholesale prices. As luck would have it our data center have just increased our limit at no extra cost and also dropped the add-on rates. Really if your site goes over 50 GB a month you have to start looking at alternatives to shared hosting.

    Cheers,

    Mark

    Re: Unmetered Bandwidth?

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for clearing that up. It does make business sense. I guess at the end of the day I was just thinking about it purely from a personal and selfish point of view - I had a hypothetical scenario in my head in which the figures didn't play nice.

Anyway, I've just noticed that the limits have doubled AND the additional bandwidth costs have lowered. Kudos! Can't say you guys don't listen to your customers.

    Cheers,

    Jits
