Cannot connect SQL 2005 using Management Studio from Vista Client

I can connect to sql server using Management Studio from my XP machine just fine.

I cannot connect from any Vista machine.

    I cannot figure out why?

The vista machine connects to local servers using TCP, just fine.  I've tested locally using TCP and server authentication, not windows authentication.

NOTE: I am using <ipaddress>,<port> and again, this works fine from any XP machine.

    Thanks in advance,

Vista Firewall is probably blocking the port.  Unfortunately I'm not up on Vista protocols so I couldn't tell you how to open the port.

Re: Cannot connect SQL 2005 using Management Studio from Vista Client

    I have SQL Server 2005 SP1 and SP2 installed.

    Firewall is disabled.

    UAC is disabled.

User account is an dministrator and I'm also shift-clicking to run as administrator. (both can't hurt)

Exactly what error message are you getting on your Vista box when you try to connect/login?

Re: Cannot connect SQL 2005 using Management Studio from Vista Client

    Exact error:

     http://devel.mcpapps.net/images/vistaclienterror.jpg

"(provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)

    (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060)

     OTHER NOTES:

I am able to connect to my local sql server using sql authentication, addressing the server by ip address, and picking the TCP provider drop down.

I am able to connect to ultima's sql server from all my XP machines.

Again, I cannot connect to ultima's sql server from any vista client. ( I have two vista business installs.  One clean install and one upgraded from XP Home.)

I have searched google for about a week trying to solve this.  Still don't have an answer...

You may be using the wrong IP address.  This is the one I use:

    69.16.211.96,937

Any idea when remote access will be reenabled?  Also it would have been nice to have received an email that this functionality was going to be disabled, slightly frustrating to have to hunt down this fact.

I'm having the same problem.  Did you ever get an answer?  I can't get anyone to answer my emails to support@ultimahosts.net.

My vista problem is separate from ultima disabling remote connections.

Remote connections seems to be disabled at the moment. Does anybody know when they will be up again?

    NOOOOOOO!!!!

According to their announcment here: http://forums.ultimahosts.net/forums/thread/1602.aspx  this is extremely unfortunate...I know I have a small account, which may not matter in the big scheme of ultima hosts, but this is the number 1 reason why I am still with ultima hosts (among other reasons). However, because of remote connections. I've enjoyed the ability to interact with my databases within visual studio, but it seems that has come to an end. :( Rarely does any host provide remote connections, and now ultima is no longer one of them. I do have another host that allows it, but it is more expensive than ultima....

Is there some way for sql server to detect if someone is just using visual studio? or to just limit remote connections, instead of banning them? PLEASE RECONSIDER Ultima.

    Re: NOOOOOOO!!!!

    Hello Mark,

No, I don't have a static IP :( I would be surprised if many people here did.

Is there any way at all that I can use Visual Studio or SSMS to interact with my databases? It is feature that has really streamlined my work, and it used to be a large part of why like Ultima. What's odd is that all your plans on your site say we can access databases via SSMS...

Anyway, I foresee myself quickly outgrowing my current plan soon and getting a reseller plan, but this issue will affect my decision with which company to go with.

     Thanks,

    Shola

    Re: NOOOOOOO!!!!

All new plans can access MSSQL Server directly. These are all using newer less loaded servers. Windows Reseller 10 etc will give you direct access. We have only blocked one MSSQL Server which was our first one and has a number of unlimited database plans on it. We now do not offer unlimited databases on any of our MSSQL servers which has overcome a previous problem.
