    Performance?

    Hi,

I'm thinking of using SmarterMail that's available through UltimaHosts as our business email server, but thus far, I find it to be extremely slow.  For example, it takes really long time for my test email to show up after being sent from my other email account.  Is this to be expected?  If so, what other options are available to improve the performance?

    Thanks.

    How long is "really long"?

I just sent myself a test email.  My SMTP is my ISP (SBC/AT&T).  My POP3 is Ultima.  I received the email in 50 seconds.

    Re: Performance?

I lack the patience to wait too long, so I haven't timed it exactly, but at least 15-20 minutes (could be much longer), but I do eventually get the emails.  Oddly enough, sending out is immediate.  I'm not sure what you mean by SMTP?  Do I need to setup something beyond UltimaHosts?

    Re: Performance?

Anything more than a few minutes is too long.  15-20 is definitely a problem, but it may not be Ultima that is the problem.

If you are using the SmarterMail webmail interface (and not a client like Outlook), then you might need to adjust the amount of time the Inbox is automatically refreshed so that it shows you new emails.

To do this, go to Settings > My Settings > Webmail.  Change the "Auto Refresh Rate" to 1 minute.  This is the equivalent of automatically checking for new mail every X minutes, so if this is currently set to 15 minutes, then that would probably explain the apparent delay.  Set it to 1 minute and try again.

    Hi Vestry,

The delay that you are seeing is due to a new feature in SmarterMail called "Grey Listing".  Take a look at this KB article for an explanation of Grey Listing and how to disable.it.

    Re: Performance?

    Thanks James and William,

I disabled the Grey Listing after reading the KB and it got rid of the delay.  I suppose by doing this, I open up myself to lots of spam.  It's good knowing that the option is available should the spamming gets too frequent.

    Re: Performance?

Ok, thank you very much for this info.
It is written: "{...}Smartermail puts the address into a 'good sender' list that it keeps for a number of days (currently set to 180), so any message between {...}"

Any possibility to change the number of days it keeps the good sender ???

    Re: Performance?

I think we'll bump up the number of days to 1 year. Greylisting by the way has done wonders for us in terms of SPAM as I personally only get 1-2 SPAM emails per week whereas before I would get around 10 a day.

Also keep in mind that we are now offering fully dedicated mail servers for $30 per month. This gives you a 50 domain smartermail mail server with admin rights and 5 GB of space.

    Cheers,

    Mark
